Cannes: Omar Sy, Luis Guzman Team Up for Action Comedy 'Belleville Cop'
Lionsgate will introduce the multi-language film to foreign buyers at the market.
Omar Sy and Luis Guzman are heading up an international cast for Rachid Bouchareb's action comedy Belleville Cop for Lionsgate.
The Intouchables and Jurassic World star is joined by Luis Guzman (Keanu. We’re the Millers ), Algerian actress Biyouna, Cesar-nominated French actress Julie Ferrier (Heartbreaker. Claude Lelouch’s Everyone’s Life ), French actor Franck Gastambide and Diem Ngyen. Lionsgate will introduce Belleville Cop. which it is dubbing a multi-language film, to foreign buyers at the Cannes market (the dialogue is a mix of French, English and Spanish).
Sy plays Baaba Keita, who has built his whole life in the working-class Paris neighborhood of Belleville, where his beloved mother reigns as queen. As a cop, heКјs refused all promotions in order to stay there. Even his girlfriend is tired of watching him getting nowhere. When his childhood friend Roland comes to visit from Miami to warn him about the drug trade taking over their neighborhood, Baaba wants to find out more, but his buddy gets killed before he can say anything else. To avenge his friend, Baaba packs his things and his mother and moves to Miami. In order to see his investigation through to the end, he teams up with an American cop, Ricardo (Guzman), who doesnКјt like the fact that Baaba doesnКјt go by the book.
Production is under way in Paris and Miami on the film, which was written by Bouchareb and Larry Gross (Another 48 Hours ).
Davis Films’ Samuel Hadida (Resident Evil franchise) is producing with Tessalit Films. Hadida’s Metropolitan FilmExport will release the film in France in late spring 2018.

Added Hadida: “When I first read Larry Gross's script, I knew this was special, a cross between 48 Hours and Rush Hour. Combined with Rachid Boukchareb's unique vision, it is an updated buddy movie for today's sensibilities.”
Sy, who won a Cesar Award for best actor for The Intouchables. also co-starred in X-Men: Days of Future Past .
Bouchareb is no stranger to Cannes, with two of his features having screened in competition: Hors la loi (2010) and Indigenes (2006). He received an Academy Award nomination in 1995 for best foreign-language film for Poussieres de vie .
Lionsgate’s Cannes market roster also includes Chaos Walking. starring Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland, the action comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me with Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon, and Flarsky. a comedy starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen.
